旁白：在良久良久以前，有一个叫做年的传说。

Narrator: In the long long ago, there was a legend called "Nian".

旁白：年是一个凶猛的野兽，每年冬天的末了一天，它都会出来侵害公民。

Narrator: Nian was a fierce beast that would come out on the last day of winter every year to harm the people.

(中文)

旁白：人们害怕年，只能躲在家里，不敢出门。

(英文)

Narrator: People were afraid of Nian and could only hide at home, dare not go out.

(中文)

旁白：但是有一天，一个聪明的老人见告人们，年害怕赤色和鞭炮的声音。

Narrator: But one day, a wise old man told the people that Nian was afraid of the color red and the sound of firecrackers.

旁白：于是，在那个冬天，人们用赤色的纸做成了赤色的灯笼和贴上了赤色的对联，还在门口挂了赤色的鞭炮。

Narrator: So, that winter, the people made red lanterns and posted red couplets made of red paper, and hung red firecrackers at the door.

旁白：到了年的那一天，年看到了赤色的灯笼和鞭炮，吓得跑掉了。

Narrator: On the day of Nian, when Nian saw the red lanterns and firecrackers, it was scared away.

旁白：从此往后，人们每到冬天就会挂起赤色的灯笼、贴上赤色的对联、挂上赤色的鞭炮，庆祝年的拜别。

Narrator: From then on, every winter, people would hang red lanterns, post red couplets, and hang red firecrackers to celebrate the departure of Nian.
