- Did you talk to her? Did she get the dress? What are they going to do with that florist, will she be available?

- The wedding has been called off.

- What?!

“取消”除了put off还有这个表达

- Yeah, they got into a huge fight, she found out he was cheating. She just cancelled everything.

- Oh, I had an outfit already. Horrible...

…………………………………………

To call something off means to cancel an event or a plan.

Called off means cancel. But the opposite does not work. You cannot say, “She called it on!”

例句:

The game was called off because of bad weather.比赛因景象恶劣被取消。

Many things can happen to a wedding:

A wedding can be delayed – put off/push back

A wedding can be cancelled取消 – be called off

A wedding can happen – take place/put on

I put on a party. (I had a party) You can throw a wedding. (You can have a wedding.)

A wedding can start to end – finish, the wedding is over, wind down, die down

The wedding died down at 11 p.m.

The wedding was over at 11 p.m.

The wedding winded down at 11 p.m.

Travel Trip Dialogue:

We need to push back our trip to Asia. The flights are too expensive.

If we want to find great deals on flights, we might have to work overtime checking the travel websites.

Agreed, I think if we put our heads together, we could find something doable.

Great! Let’s split up the work. You can keep a tab on trip.com and kayak.com. I will keep an eye on expedia.com and airasia.com. How does that sound?

That sounds perfect. I think we can find a good flight in no time. After all, two minds are better than one!

Great, once you find a great deal let me know and I can book it for both of us.

Purchasing flights and searching for ‘deals’

Flights can be expensive so we want to find cheap flights that fit our travel itinerary/schedule.

There are often great deals (good prices) at certain times and on certain days.

For example; fewer people fly on Mondays so ticket prices might be cheaper then.

I got a great deal on a flight for next Monday to Korea!

A great deal includes discounted prices, special sales and other special offers by businesses. A good deal just means something at a good price.

Flights can be bought but we can also use ‘book’ for any ticket purchase. Book is a verb.

I booked two tickets for the movie this Saturday.

Work overtime

While it is common to work overtime at your job, ‘working overtime’ also is okay for saying ‘let’s spend extra time on...’ or ‘let’s work extra hard on...’

Putting our heads/minds together

This phrase simply means working together. Putting our heads together means lets work together.

No time

A person can have no time and something can also be done in no time.

I don’t have time! I have no time for that!

This will be quick. We can get a COVID test in no time.

Doing something in no time means it is done extremely quickly. It is done in no time.

What can be done in no time?

What is something that can be done quickly?

I can make tea in no time.

I can drink water in no time.

I can buy it from Taobao in no time.

I can send the package in no time.
